WHAT IS DUB? HOW TO PRODUCE DUB-REGGAE: [1] [2] [3] |
|
|
Dub-Reggae track (or version) is a heavily manipulated and re-arranged remix of a reggae-based song or instrumental composition with emphasis on rhythm section (riddim, combination of bass, drums, percussions and some extra rhythm instruments), typical drop-outs of instrumental leads or vocals and wide variety of sound effects, delay, reverb and other sound manipulation.
Applying specific effect(s), adjusting and manipulating parameters to the beat of the music in real time (DUBBING ON-THE-FLY) is in the heart of technical aspect of dubbing. The producer during dub-session acts pretty much like a musician using mixing board as "an instrument" (SEE: SETUP EXAMPLE 1).

To produce dub-reggae tracks you need an original song or instrumental recording, recorded on multi-track tape or digital recorder, so you can separately manipulate bass line, drums, instrumentals and vocals.
Basic Production Equipment Setup:
analog or digital
multitrack recorder,
mixing board or desk console,
effect-processor(s)
(spring reverb,
digital reverb, digital or analog tape delay-echo, phaser, equalizer, compressor) and two-track mix-down recorder.
